FILM VAULT... FRIDAY?

Title: Man on the Moon (1999)

Credits: Jim Carrey, Danny DeVito, Paul Giamatti, Courtney Love

Why: When you think of the Jim Carrey "serious" roles you probably think of "The Truman Show" and the classic "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." (We’re agreeing to forget that "The Majestic" ever happened, okay?)

Anyway, in between "Truman Show" and "Eternal Sunshine", he made "Man on the Moon." It got pretty good reviews and even garnered some Oscar discussion for Carrey, but ultimately failed to bring in the monster returns that was expected... but that doesn't mean it wasn't a damn good movie.

I understand that some people weren’t big fans of Andy Kaufman... He was a polarizing guy, but regardless, Carrey's portrayal was dead on and worth price of admission alone... Add in the fact that Paul Giamatti, Danny DeVito, and even Courtney Love turn in solid performances and there is NO reason why this movie shouldn't be in your DVD collection.

BTW, Courtney Love has occasionally made me do the mouth throw up thing, but she is somehow beautiful in this movie... not attractive, but beautiful... seriously.

Remote Scene Stopper: Two words... [1] Tony [2] Clifton...

Goosebump/Tear Factor: The big show at Carnegie Hall... get's me every time.

Overall Rating: 8.5, I know, I know, that sounds kind of high... especially when you consider that IMDB (usually dead on accurate) only gives it a 7.3. But hear me out.

I JUST got done watching the movie like 20 minutes ago and seriously, I can't think of a single thing I didn’t like about it.

It has everything you could possibly look for in a movie... it's funny, it's smart, and it’s heartbreaking. Plus it's got the amazing REM soundtrack!

I had planned on taking a nap on the couch and was only looking for something to fall asleep to when I stumbled across it... the nap never happened and now I'm in front of my computer typing up my first Film Vault ______ in months. That should count for something, right?
